Zambia Infrastructure Report

BMI View: The rating for Zambia's construction sector suffers this quarter due to a revision of historical data that has downgraded estimates but the long term macro trends and growth rate remains strong nonetheless. The country still has a healthy pipeline of new projects which continues to attract investment. Year on year (y-o-y) growth is forecast at 24 . 68 % in 2014.

The construction sector is being targeted under the broader reform agenda of the Patriotic Front government, and while substantial progress has been made, there is still much room for improvement. Change has been particularly evident in the construction sector, including management changes at Zesco, the road development agency, a freeze on construction to ensure proper permitting processes and the seizure of the national railway. Tough action in the industry is likely to create a more transparent sector over the longer term.

One important impact of the reform agenda has been an uptick in development funding, providing financial support to a number of crucial projects in the power sector.  About 90% of Zambia's first successful Eurobond issue is expected to be used for road, rail and energy infrastructure projects.

Key Trends And Developments

  • Zambia is expected to raise the total power output by 600MW by end-2014 from the current 2,200MW, once the power generation projects in selected parts of the country are completed. By end-2014 Kariba North Bank extension and Maamba power plant will begin production, increasing the country's electricity production, according to the latest edition of the African Report. The report also claims Zambia's power supply will be further boosted by output from the 120MW Itezhi-Tezhi hydropower generating plant, scheduled to start production in 2015. Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation is also on track with the 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower power plant project. The project's completion deadline has been moved from 2018 to 2021, owing to challenges...
