United Kingdom Medical Devices Report

Espicom Industry View: The UK medical device market continues to be one of the strongest performers in the region but this could be tempered slightly if the Department of Health's efficiency programme is successfully implemented, as aims to radically change the pricing, supply chain and procurement of medical devices in the NHS with the introduction of bar-coding and a single price comparison mechanism throughout the country amongst the initiatives on the cards. The programme will start with a couple of NHS trusts and the target for complete roll out is 2017.

Headline Industry Forecasts

  • The UK has one of the largest medical device markets in the world, valued at US$9.9bn in 2013. The domestic market is the sixth largest in the world and third largest in Europe. In 2012, exports fell by -3.6% (-2.7% in local currency) to a total US$5,655.1mn. Based on latest collated monthly data to year ending December 2013, exports grew by 8.2% to reach US$6,059.8mn.
