While the demand for expensive medical equipment is largely met by imports, the domestic industry is gradually accounting for a larger share . D iagnostic imaging exports have more than doubled since 2005, accounting for over 40% of the total in 2011.

  • In 2013, the Ukrainian medical device market was estimated at US$672.0mn, or US$15 per capita. This market size is comparable to Greece; in per capita terms, the market is similar to Argentina. The 2008-2013 CAGR is estimated at -2.8% but the market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 7.9% over the 2013-2018 period, reaching US$985.0mn, or US$23 per capita by 2018.

  • Around 90% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Ukraine imported medical devices valued at US$599.9mn in 2011; this represented an increase of 9.6% over 2010 and a 2006-2011 CAGR of 13.2%. Imports have recovered from the sharp decrease experienced in 2009, although they still remain below the US$683.3mn recorded in 2008.

  • Ukraine is not a major exporter of medical equipment, although steady growth was recorded in the 2005-2011 period, with the exception of 2009, when exports dropped by 12.8%. In 2011, exports stood at US$40.8mn, representing an increase of 16.1% over 2010 and a 2006-2011 CAGR of 13.2%. The trade deficit increased from -US$512.4mn in 2010 to -US$559.1mn in 2011, due to strong import growth.

  • There are around 250 companies developing and producing medical devices in Ukraine. The range of domestically manufactured medical devices remains limited, and the demand for expensive medical equipment is largely met by imports. Domestic medical device production is estimated to be over US$100mn.
