Turkey Medical Devices Report

Espicom Industry View: The Turkish medical device market is expected to grow by a CAGR of 3.4 % over the 2013-2018 period, driven by import growth, the expansion of healthcare facilities , including the large city hospital complexes, and rising health expenditure. The market is largely supplied by imports but its reliance on medical devices manufactured outside of the country should reduce if the government is successful in implementing a project that is intended to boost the domestic production of diagnostic medical devices and other medical equipment.

Headline Industry Forecasts

  • In 2013, the Turkish medical device market was estimated at US$2,421.6mn, or US$32 per capita. This total was almost twice the size of the Czech market; in per capita terms, the market was similar to Bulgaria. The 2008-2013 CAGR was estimated at 2.4% but the market is expected to expand at a slightly higher CAGR of 3.4% over the 2013-2018 period, reaching US$2,865.3mn, or US$36 per capita by 2018.

  • Around 85% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Turkey imported medical devices valued at US$2,058.4mn in 2013; this represented an increase of 6.8% over 2012, in US dollar terms, and a 2008-2013 CAGR of 2.9%. Imports have generally improved since the large decrease in 2009 caused by poor economic conditions.

  • Turkey exports more medical devices than most neighbouring countries, and the total is rising, reaching a new high of US$366.9mn in 2013, a rise of 26.0% over the previous year and a 2008-2013 CAGR of 17.2%. The trade deficit grew from -US$1,636.4mn in 2012 to -US$1,691.5mn in 2013, due to stronger import growth.

  • Turkey has a large number of medical manufacturers, but these tend to be small-scale, concentrating on cheap, low-technology items, such as bandages and syringes. Domestic medical device production is estimated to be in excess of US$700mn.
