Switzerland Medical Devices Report

Espicom Industry View: The Swiss medical device market is expected to grow by a CAGR of 3.3 % over the 2013-2018 period, with other medical devices and orthopaedics & prosthetics expected to have the highest growth during this period. Over the last 15 years the Swiss medical technology sector has grown faster than almost any other sector in the country. Government technology development programmes, favourable tax rates, quality staff and research have all contributed.

Headline Industry Forecasts

  • In 2013, the Swiss medical device market was estimated at US$3,076.6mn, or US$396 per capita. The total market is twice the size of Norway; per capita spending is the second highest in the world at US$396, just behind the USA. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 3.3% over the 2013-2018 period, reaching US$3,623.7mn, or US$459 per capita by 2018.

  • Around 88% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Switzerland imported medical devices valued at US$3,882.6mn in 2012; this represented a decrease of 2.8% compared with 2011 and a 2007-2012 CAGR of 6.7%. Imports had grown every year between 2003 and 2011, before falling in 2012.

  • Switzerland's medical equipment export sector has apparently grown rapidly in recent years, but this growth is partly attributable to re-exports of medical device goods. In 2012, exports stood at US$10,244.1mn, around double the total in 2004. However, this represented a fall of 3.5% compared with 2011 and a 2007-2012 CAGR of 7.1%. The trade deficit decreased from -US$6,619.5mn in 2011 to -US$6,361.5mn in 2012, due to falling imports.

  • The Swiss market provides high quality products and has a reputation for innovation. Domestic manufacturing is very strong, particularly in the orthopaedics sector, where Switzerland is one of the world's leading exporters. Domestic medical device production is estimated to be around US$11bn.
