Sweden Telecommunications Report

BMI View:

D espite Sweden being one of the most advanced telecoms markets, BMI believes that the market has passed its saturation point and any subscriber growth will come from cannibalising the shares of existing operators. However, growing data usage could help the operators grow their profit margins despite the relatively stagnant subscriber numbers and lower income from traditional voice and other non-data services. The purchase of Tele2's consumer broadband and VoIP business by Telenor gave that company a welcome boost in scale, but it remains to be seen whether it can fully capitalise on the opportunities presented by converged services. Tele2, on the other hand seems to be focussing more on M2M services.

Key Data

  • The latest operator data for Q214 show that the mobile market reached 14.488mn users for a penetration rate of 150.4%.

  • LTE subscription growth accelerated in 2013, to 1.546mn connections, coinciding with the arrival of a wider range of LTE-enabled handsets.

  • Growth in fixed broadband subscriptions is heavily weighted to higher speed technologies such as fibre, with subscriptions up 15.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 1.191mn at the end of 2013. Meanwhile DSL and cable subscriptions continued to decline.

  • Total M2M connections rose to 5.185mn in 2013, up by 31.2% y-o-y. Rising revenues and traffic bode well for this segment.

Key Developments

In June 2014 cable broadband operator Com Hem listed on the stock market and the initial public offering took place on June 16. The IPO increased ComHem's shares by 5% and raised SEK5.67bn This will provide the company with the increased financial flexibility needed to develop new services for a market that is being disrupted by infrastructure-agnostic over-the-top (OTT) services. Its recently-launched TiVo digital TV on-demand service provided some much needed respite to company's revenues highlighting the importance of next-generation products to its long-term survival.
