Espicom Industry View: The Russian medical device market is expected to grow by a CAGR of 9.1 % over the 2013-2018 period, alongside increases in GDP and government health spending. Currently, the majority of high-tech medical devices are import ed, but the domestic industry should be able to meet 50% of demand by 2020, if the government is successful in implementing a strategy designed to help the local industry attract investment and produce competitive, safe, good quality and affordable products.

  • In 2013, the Russian medical device market was estimated at US$7,434.1mn, or US$52 per capita. This market size is comparable to Canada; in per capita terms, the market is similar to Croatia. The 2008-2013 CAGR is estimated at 2.4% but the market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 9.1% over the 2013-2018 period, reaching US$11,504.0mn, or US$81 per capita by 2018.

  • Around 92% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Russia imported medical devices valued at US$6,195.1mn in 2012; this represented an increase of 37.5% over 2011 and a 2007-2012 CAGR of 13.0%. Imports have grown every year since 2003, with the exception of 2009 when a fall of 31.5% was observed.

  • Russia is not a major exporter of medical equipment, but the total has risen consistently since 2001, falling only in 2009-2010. Exports reached a new high of US$133.5mn in 2012, a rise of 27.9% over the previous year and a 2007-2012 CAGR of 3.1%. The trade deficit increased from -US$4,401.8mn in 2011 to -US$6,061.6mn in 2012, due to strong import growth.

  • Russia has around 1,200 manufacturers engaged in medical device production. Around 12,000 types of medical device are manufactured locally, including modern digital low dose X-ray apparatus, patient monitors, electrocardiographs, operating tables, hospital beds and medical furniture.
