Romania Shipping Report

The port of Constantza, Romania's main maritime facility, is forecast to see steady growth in terms of both total tonnage and container throughput in 2015 in line with the country's and the eurozone's projected economic recovery.

Still robust exports and recovering private consumption will support freight volumes at the country's ports.

Over the medium-term, we project further growth at the port of Constantza and the recovery to its pre-downturn total throughput volumes, while container throughput is projected to remain below 2007-2008 levels.

Headline Industry Data

  • 2015 port of Constantza tonnage throughput forecast to grow 5.4%, over the medium-term we project a 24.0% increase.

  • 2015 port of Constantza container throughput forecast to grow 3.8%, over the medium-term we project a 26.9% increase.

  • 2015 total trade growth forecast at 6.0%.

Key Industry Trends

Constantza to Keep Europe's Grain Hub Role: Cargill Inc. and its joint venture (JV) partner Transport Trade Services (TTS) have completed their EUR15mn investment project in Canopus Star, a grain terminal at the port of Constantza, Cargill announced at the end of August 2014. As a result of the project commenced in July 2013, the terminal's operational capacity for grains was boosted from 50,000 to 110,000 tonnes, as the port expected to post another yearly increase in grain handling.

Key Risks T o Outlook

The potential for growth at the country's ports stems from BMI's positive outlook on the Romanian economy. Container throughput will be driven by the country's consumers, with consumer demand in Romania forecast to strengthen. The country's real GDP is estimated to increase by 3.4% in 2015.

The main risk to our outlook is for a more significant softening of external demand from core eurozone economies. This would impair exports and will have an adverse effect on the country's large manufacturing sector. A downside risk to our forecasts comes as a result of Romania's heavy exposure to the...
