Peru Telecommunications Report

BMI View : Peru has the potential to be one of the most dynamic markets in Latin America over the next five years, with increased levels of competition across multiple sectors spurring rapid growth. In the mobile sector, new entrant Viettel officially launched services this quarter, adding a new player to a market dominated by Telefónica . Entel ( Nextel ) has pledged investment of USD1.2bn over the next few years as it aims to become a competitive force. Furthermore, regional MVNO Virgin Mobile is also eyeing up Peru for its next market launch. In the wireline sector, the entrance of DirecTV and TV Azteca   over the next two years could also help to shake up competition dynamics. While Peru currently trails many of its regional peers for telecoms penetration, its large market size is attracting foreign investment and should help to encourage rapid growth.

Key Data

  • The mobile market contracted in terms of subscriptions in 2013, down 1.9% to 29.173mn, but the underlying trend of moderate growth remains in-tact, with the net loss specifically derived from inactive prepaid subscription discounting.

  • Movistar reported in October 2014 that it had reached nearly 100,000 4G LTE subscriptions since the launch of the services in January.

  • New entrant Viettel has acquired 15,000 in its first few weeks of launch in July 2014.

  • Pay-TV services in Peruvian homes reached 40.6% at end March, up 2.9 percentage points (pp) year-on-year (y-o-y), according to a study by the country's statistics bureau Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEI).

By the end of July, the operator had acquired nearly...
