  • The medical device market is heavily supplied by imports, which account for over 90% of the market. Imports have grown very strongly in recent years, rising by 17.8% in 2011, and by 8.6% in CAGR terms between 2006 and 2011. The actual figure may be higher, as many items of second-hand equipment are imported as scrap, only to be reassembled and sold as new or nearly new devices. In the 12 months to February 2013, the value of imports fell by 25.5% to stand at US$131.0mn.

  • Medical device exports stood at US$324.7mn in 2011, with other medical devices (mainly surgical instruments) accounting for over 80% of this figure. In the 12 months ending February 2013, the value of exports climbed by 4.7% to stand at US$326.2mn.

  • Surgical instruments make up the bulk of a limited domestic manufacturing sector. This takes place in facilities in the Punjab region of Sialkot and equipment is of a high standard, although the majority is destined for export overseas.
