Mozambique Power Report

BMI View: Mozambique is one of the most attractive markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. The economy is growing rapidly , and the government has liberalized the country's investment laws, providing an enabling environment for exploiting Mozambique ' s abundant energy the resources. However, barriers to investment remain, including high levels of corruption and low-level political instability.

The outlook for Mozambique's power sector is good. After decades of civil war, the political situation has stabilized, the economy and population are growing rapidly, and the government has liberalized the country's investment laws, providing an enabling environment for the development of electricity. A number of major projects are in the pipeline which will exploit Mozambique's abundant water and coal resources, including the recently-announced 300MW coal-fired power station to be built by an international consortium in the Tete province. Meanwhile, the government is expanding access to electricity with the help of international donors, which will underpin an expanding consumer base. However, barriers to investment remain, including high levels of corruption and low-level political instability, while market opportunities are limited by the low purchasing power of both consumers.

Recent Developments

  • In March, Moatize Termoeléctrica, a consortium made up of Brazil's Vale, Japan's Mitsui, Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Electricidade de Moçambique announced the development of a 300MW coal-fired power station in the Tete province, with an estimated cost of USD1bn. The project will be will be one of the biggest investments in Mozambique's history, as well as being the first in a wave of new coal-fired power plants

  • In March, Electricidade de Moc?ambique warned that its current tariffs are unsustainable and must be increased to between 10-12 meticais/KWh. At the present time, the company is paying 9 meticais/KWh, and selling electricity for eight.

Electricity Generation forecasts for Thermal, Coal, Gas, Oil, Nuclear, Hydro and Non-Hydro Renewables. For this section, we provide information on electricity generation (TWh), % growth year-on-year, KWh per capita, and the % of total electricity generation. The thermal fuels (coal, gas and oil) also have figures for their % of total thermal electricity generation.

Electricity Generating Capacity offers forecasts for the potential net capacity and net capacity growth % change year-on-year for the whole power industry. It also includes individual forecasts for capacity (MW), capacity growth % change year-on-year, and % of total capacity for Thermal, Nuclear, Hydro and Non-Hydro Renewables.
