Mozambique Food & Drink

BMI View: Consumers within Mozambique will continue to increase their food expenditure as their incomes rise on the back of strong, sustainable real GDP growth. As Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, Mozambicans spend a great proportion of their income on food and drink, and we believe this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. We believe that food consumption per capita will rise year-on-year at an average rate of about 11% between 2014 and 2018, with real GDP per capita rising by a similar rate. Another of our core views is that over the longer term, the continent has the potential to become a major exporter itself. Huge tracts of unused arable land, low fertiliser use and poor irrigation mean there is immense scope for improving agricultural yields, which are among the lowest globally.

Key Forecasts

  • 2014 total food consumption growth in local currency terms: +13.8%; compound annual growth rate (CAGR) forecast to 2018: +10.8%.

  • 2014 per capita food consumption growth (local currency): +11.1%; CAGR forecast to 2018: +8.6%.

  • 2014 beer volume sales growth: +9.2%; CAGR forecast to 2018: +8.4%.

  • 2014 carbonated soft drink volume sales growth: +11.7%; CAGR forecast to 2018: +10.1%.

  • 2014 total mass grocery retail sales growth in local currency terms: +15.0%; CAGR forecast to 2018: +11.1%.
