  • Mexico is the top medical device importer in Latin America. The market is dominated by imports, principally from the USA. In US dollar terms, imports grew by 8.3% in the 12 months to May 2014, reaching US$3.5bn. In comparison, imports recorded a 2008-2013 CAGR of 6.9%.

  • Almost all of medical device exports are shipped across the border to the USA due to maquiladora activities, but Mexico ought to develop its economy outside of the maquiladora programme for increased stability. In US dollar terms, exports grew by 8.4% in the 12 months to May 2014, reaching US$7.2bn. In comparison, exports registered a 2008-2013 CAGR of 6.4%.

  • Espicom estimates domestic medical device production at over US$7.0bn in 2013. For many, Mexico has become an extension of the USA. The country is serving a demanding product mix, from defibrillators to diagnostic imaging equipment to traditional disposable medical devices.
