Japan Medical Devices Report

Espicom Industry View: The Japanese medical device market remains the second largest in the world, behind only the USA. The medical device market has continued to exhibit a slow but positive growth (in local currency terms) in recent years, with under half of the market supplied by imports. Japan's rapidly ageing population , however , continues to place a strain on the country's healthcare system ; t he government in its FY 2014 draft budget has decided to raise medical fees by an average 0.1%.

Headline Industry Forecasts

  • The Japanese medical device market remains the second largest in the world, behind only the USA. The market is projected to expand at a CAGR of 2.5% in the 2013-2018 period, which should see it grow from an estimated US$29.8bn in 2013 to US$33.6bn in 2018. Due to exchange rate differences, actual growth, when measured in local currency terms, is expected to be higher, at 3.1% during the forecast period.

  • Japan is the world's third largest importer of medical devices, behind only the USA and Germany. Imports reached a new high of US$12,915.5mn in 2012, a rise of 10.1% over the previous year's total. In local currency terms, the rise was similar, at 10.2% in 2012. Imports grew at a CAGR of 10.8% in the 2007-2012 period in US dollar terms but in local currency terms growth was less pronounced, at a CAGR of 2.5% during the period in question. Based on the latest collated monthly data, however, imports to the year ending November 2013 fell by 5.5% to US$12,093.2mn.

  • Japan is currently the world's ninth largest exporter of medical devices. Exports grew by 2.7% in US dollar terms (2.9% in local currency terms) to reach US$7,024.1mn in 2012. In the 2007-2012 period, exports rose by a CAGR of 3.4% in US dollar terms but this was due to exchange rate movements; exports actually fell by a CAGR of 4.3% in local currency terms. The latest collated monthly data show that exports fell by 4.3% to US$6,743.3mn for the year ending November 2013.
