Espicom Industry View: The Japanese medical device market remains the second largest in the world, behind only the USA. The medical device market has continued to exhi bit a slow but positive growth in local currency terms in recent years, with under half of the market supplied by imports. The market looks set to expand by a CAGR of 2.9%   in US dollar terms to 2018.

  • The Japanese medical device market remains the second largest in the world, behind only the USA. In US dollar terms, the market is projected to expand by a CAGR of 2.9%, which should see it rise from an estimated US$30,160.5mn in 2013 to US$34,854.8mn in 2018. Due to exchange rate differences, the market growth in local currency terms is expected to be higher, recording a CAGR of 3.8% during the period in question.

  • Japan is the world's third largest importer of medical devices, behind only the USA and Germany. In US dollar terms, due to exchange rate differences, imports fell by 6.9% to US$12,022.8mn in 2013, compared with US$12,915.1mn reported in 2012. In local currency terms, imports actually rose, by 13.8% over the previous year to reach JPY1,173.5bn in 2013, compared with JPY1,031.2bn reported in 2012.

  • Japan is amongst the world's top 10 largest medical device exporters. In US dollar terms, exports fell by 4.4% to US$6,721.9mn in 2013, compared with US$7,028.1mn reported in 2012. In local currency terms, exports actually grew, by 16.9% to reach JPY656.1bn in 2013, compared with JPY561.2bn reported in 2012. Based on the latest collated monthly data, exports to year ending April 2014 fell by 5.1% to US$6,620.5mn.

  • Based on figures by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), Japanese domestic medical device production stood at JPY1,895.2bn (US$23.7bn) in 2012.
