The best opportunities still remain in and around Java and surrounding areas but healthcare provision in the rural parts of the country remain underdeveloped.

  • The Indonesian medical device market, in US dollar terms, is projected to rise by a CAGR of 12.7%, which should bring it from an estimated US$672.8mn in 2013 to US$1,221.9mn in 2018. By individual product area, the CAGRs are expected to range from 20.3% for diagnostic imaging to 5.9% for other medical devices.

  • The bulk of the Indonesian medical device market is supplied by imports. In US dollar terms, imports grew by 8.4% in 2013 to reach US$647.0mn in 2013. Due to currency exchange fluctuations, growth was largely positive in recent years. Following a 1.4% fall in 2009, imports rose by 37.9% in 2010, 2.1% in 2011 and 21.0% in 2012. In CAGR terms, imports grew by 12.7% from 2008-2013. Latest collated monthly data to March 2014 shows that imports rose by 5.3% to US$624.0mn.

  • In US dollar terms, exports rose by 18.4% to US$326.6mn in 2013. Exports achieved double digit growth rates of 12.1% and 17.1% in 2009 and 2010 respectively before a modest 0.3% rise in 2010, although they rose again by 8.9% in 2012. The CAGR during the 2008-2013 period was 11.2%. Based on latest collated monthly data, exports for the year ending in March 2014 rose by 7.0% to US$315.3mn.

  • Locally-owned domestic production mainly consists of the manufacture of basic items, such as surgical gloves, bandages, orthopaedic aids and hospital furniture but a few local companies, such as DIKAMED and PT Andini Sarana also manufacture more advanced equipment such as ECGs, ultrasound machines and dental machines.
