France Medical Devices Report

Espicom Industry View : Although France continues to rank among the top five largest medical markets in the world , growth rates are modest by global standards. The continuing drive to hold down costs and the more restrictive measures being implemented to regulate medical device expenditure in a similar manner to drug expenditure will continue to constr ain spending on medical devices . Having implemented measures to curtail spending on reimbursable devices in the ambulatory sector, the authorities are starting to pay much greater attention to spending in the hospital sector through the PHARE hospital responsible purchasing programme, Phase 3 of which was launched in September 2013.

Headline Industry Forecasts

  • France ranks among the top five largest medical device markets in the world. Consumption of medical equipment and supplies is valued at US$14.9bn in 2013, equal to US$233 per capita. Measures have recently been taken to control spending on medical devices, similar to those already in force for pharmaceuticals, and the market is only likely to see moderate growth over the next five years.

  • Medical device imports supply around 80% of the market. Between 2007 and 2012, medical device imports grew at a CAGR of 5.9% in euros and 4.3% in US dollars. The running annual import total reached US$11,280.8mn in the 12 months to October 2013, representing y-o-y dollar growth of 4.0%. Not all imported products are destined for the domestic market due to re-exporting in some sectors.

  • Between 2007 and 2012, medical device exports grew at a CAGR of 4.0% in euros and 2.4% in US dollars. The running annual export total amounted to US$9,163.0mn in the 12 months to October 2013, representing y-o-y dollar growth of 2.1%. The balance of trade deficit has increased to US$2.1bn.

  • France has a well established medical device manufacturing industry with production concentrated on diagnostic imaging, consumables and orthopaedics & prosthetics. Total output is estimated...
