Egypt Telecommunications Report

BMI View: Egypt's telecoms market is poised for a new phase of competition following the award of a mobile virtual network operator licence to wireline incumbent operator Telecom Egypt. We expect Telecom Egypt's entry into the mobile market to boost the Egyptian mobile market, which posted considerably slower growth in 2013 than in 2012, as the company is expected to target the low-end of the market. However, steepened competition is likely to result in further downward pressure on ARPUs, which, compounded with Egypt's fragile political and economic situation, may dampen operators' willingness to invest in much needed network development. Over the long term, though, BMI believes mobile operators Mobinil, Vodacom and Etisalat may use unified licenses to offer converged telecoms services for business and residential customers.

Key Data

  • The mobile market shrunk by 1.1% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) in Q214, lowering the total number of subscriptions back under the 100mn mark.

  • The wireline market contracted by 20.3% year-on-year in FY13, against a decline of 1.8% in FY12, owing to the disconnection of lines over unpaid bills in Q213. It shrunk another 0.4% q-o-q in Q114.

  • The broadband market grew by 5.3% q-o-q in Q114, maintaining momentum from 17.2% growth in 2013 and driven strong growth in mobile broadband subscriptions.

Risk/Reward Index

Egypt remained in 12th position in our Risk/Reward Index table with an aggregate score of 46.5, compared to the regional average score of 50.7. Although it did not climb in the index, Egypt's telecoms score improved as a result of a rise in its Industry Risks score this quarter, to reflect the government's decreasing level of interference in the sector. Nevertheless, the country continues to be held back by weak Industry Rewards and Country Rewards scores, which reflect the low average revenue per user (ARPU) levels in the mobile market and relatively low GDP per capita and urbanisation rate compared to some other...
