Espicom Industry View:   The Cuban medical device market   is the smallest in the America s region a nd is projected to register the third lowest 2013-2018  CAGR in the region . The market is reliant on imports from mainly China   and Europe . US suppliers cannot compete due to the US economic embargo but opportunities might exist in a post-embargo era . Imports were inflated between 2004 and 2008 as key diagnostic imaging equipment was imported and re-exported to Venezuela, but have come down to more normal levels since then. Opportunities exist for foreign medical device companies, particularly from the fellow communist China.

This is expected to be the third lowest CAGR in the Americas region, behind Venezuela and Canada, increasing the market to US$147.8mn by 2018, equal to US$13 per capita.

  • The market is heavily reliant on medical device imports, but US companies cannot directly supply the market because of the US economic embargo. In US dollar terms, imports for the latest 12 months to December 2013 rose by an unexpected 45.7% over the previous 12 months, reaching US$108.4mn. Patient aids grew the fastest, followed by diagnostic imaging. Orthopaedics & prosthetics was the only product area posting a contraction.

  • Medical device exports are usually small, although the amount fluctuates each year due to the rise and fall in exports to Venezuela. In US dollar terms, exports for the latest 12 months to December 2013 fell by 33.2% over the previous 12 months, to US$15.6mn. Four product areas posted growth, whilst other medical devices contracted; orthopaedics & prosthetics recorded zero exports.
