Croatia Food & Drink Report

BMI View:   Croatia's economy will stagnate in 2015 and 2016. Real GDP growth will lag behind the rest of the EU, as domestic demand is constrained by a lack of progress tackling competitiveness issues. Private consumption will drag on real GDP growth over the coming quarters. Unemployment is high (around 20%), wage growth is anaemic and households have made only limited progress on deleveraging. This implies that household disposable incomes will remain under pressure for some time , constraining consumer confidence and spending.

Plodine Merger W ith Slovenian Tus : There were unconfirmed reports in summer 2014 that Croatian retailer Plodine may merge with Slovenian counterpart Tus following the Agrokor/ Mercator takeover. A possible merger would enable the two retailers to compete more effectively with Agrokor, because as a combined entity they would operate more than 130 supermarkets generating an annual turnover of EUR1bn. It is understood that a merger of the two retailers would be part of preparations for the sale of the new combined retail group to a leading European player. Italy's largest retail chain Coop has been mentioned as the likeliest future strategic partner.

Badel 1862 Search F or Strategic Partner Fails : In September 2014 Croatian alcoholic and soft drinks producer  Badel 1862 announced that the sole binding offer for a strategic partner for the company had been rejected. The offer, submitted by local company Princeps Promet, was deemed by the working...
