Anaemic consumer spending will be the main drag on Croatia's economic recovery over the next few years, and underpins our view that the economy is one of the least attractive in the EU. We expect retail sales growth to remain subdued, as disposable incomes continue to fall amidst declining wages, painfully high unemployment (19.6% in May) and still-high household indebtedness. These factors underpin our view that consumer confidence will remain in the doldrums for the foreseeable future, with households delaying big spending decisions amidst the uncertain economic environment.

Agrokor Succeeds In Mercator Bid : In summer 2014 Croatian giant Agrokor announced that it had completed a deal to acquire a 53.1% stake in Slovenian based retailer  Mercator in a deal worth EUR323.8mn. The move ends a long-running saga which involved a EUR1bn debt restructuring deal agreed with Mercator's banks in spring 2014. Agrokor has subsequently announced that it intends to launch a bid for the remaining 47% stake of Mercator that it does not own.
