Chile Infrastructure Report

BMI View: We have downgraded our construction industry forecast for Chile in 2014 from 5.6% to 4.4% real growth. This is on the back of lower than expected industry growth in 2013 and weakening GDP growth expectations as the economy starts to suffer the effects of falling copper prices - the country's primary export. That said, we maintain a positive stance over the medium term on Chile's construction industry supported by a strong project pipeline (particularly in the renewable energy sector), political stability, and an investor-friendly business environment.

Key Trends And D evelopments

  • Electricity-generating company Endesa Chile will invest US$660mn building its 150MW Los Cóndores hydropower plant in the VII Maule region. The project will reinforce Chile's central SIC grid through a 220kV, 87.6km double-circuit connection to the Ancoa substation. Construction work has started on the project and the plant is expected to start operating by 2018.

  • Renewables sector continues to expand: a US$1bn new solar power plant was awarded to Spanish firm Abengoa in January 2014. The 110MW Cerro Dominador CSP project will be in region II, in the Atacama desert. Once completed, the plant is designed to supply uninterrupted power 24 hours a day.

  • In January 2014, OHL and Sacyr submitted the winning construction and concession proposal for the US$1.06bn Américo Vespucio Oriente (AVO) expressway project in Santiago. The project involves the construction and operation of 9.3km of an urban highway at a cost of US$970mn.

  • Chile's Ministry of Civil Works (MOP) received technical and economic proposals in March 2014 from Consorcio Abengoa Chile Inabesa Teyma, Sacyr Concesiones Chile and OHL Concesiones Chile for the concession of two hospitals in the Valparaíso region. The three groups are in race for the US$260mn tender to construct, maintain and operate non-medical services in the two hospitals. The hospitals, named Red Quinta, will each have a 264-bed capacity...
