Caribbean Telecommunications Report

BMI View: We have added two new markets to the Caribbean Telecoms report in Q2 2014, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The inclusion of these two allows us to look at the region from a different angle, as both are among the most developed, supported by high GDP per capita, high proportion of postpaid subscribers and strong demand for 3G services. We expect both the Cayman Islands and Bermuda to become the outperformers in the region in terms of mobile data penetration, as centres for financial offshoring should help drive demand among visitors and locals . At the other end of the spectrum, initiatives from Cuba will see the introduction of basic mobile internet services in the country during 2014. We don't expect this will have a huge impact due to the lower spending power of Cubans and lack of available handsets but it is a positive move in the right direction. Operators throughout the region are reporting encouraging growth in 3G and 4G uptake, with double digit growth in revenues emphasising that it will become a key source of sales over the long-term.

Key Data:

  • The Dominican Republic mobile market lost 66,000 subscriptions in Q413, a decline of 0.7% q-o-q. The market has shown signs of fluctuations over the last two years, although postpaid accounts continue to steadily grow.

  • LIME in Jamaica added 140,000 subscriptions in the 100 days since the launch of its Talk EZ value tariff, a new record for the company.

  • Cayman Islands has the highest mobile penetration at over 160%, while Cuba's penetration rate remained below 20%.

  • Cable & Wireless Communications' Jamaican subsidiary registered a net loss of JMD316mn (US$2.93mn) in Q3FY13/14, ended December 31 2013, compared with JMD437.5mn (US$4.06mn) in Q3FY12/13. The operator reported a 13% year-on-year (y-o-y) fall in quarterly revenues to JMD4.93bn (US$45.75mn) in Q3FY13/14, compared with JMD6.06bn (US$56.24mn) in Q3FY12/13. EBITDA grew 29% y-o-y while mobile subscriber base increased by 23% in...
