Caribbean Telecommunications Report

BMI View:   Investment opportunities are emerging all over the Caribbean, with many markets drawing attention from potential new players. In the Bahamas, BTC is under threat from new player from the end of its monopoly licence and is keen to enter the underdeveloped Haitian telecoms sector to offset the new competitive threat. Four players including Cable & Wireless Communications , Star Mobile Caribbean , Columbus Communications and Suriname's state-owned Telesur have all shown interest in acquiring a licence in Trinidad & Tobago after the regulator solicited bids during the auction of new spectrum. We've also highlighted Cuba as a market of to watch, as there are signs it is transitioning to a more developed level. Although any progress will be gradual and likely fall short of market liberalisation. Despite the small size of the islands, regulatory regimes are generally positive and strong connections to submarine cables highlight the potential for broadband internet growth over our forecast period. We expect interest in the region to continue to grow, with plenty of opportunities for interested players.

Key Data:

  • Cayman Islands has the highest mobile penetration at over 160%, while Cuba's penetration rate remained below 20%.

  • In Cuba, internet users reached 2.92mn users in 2013, representing around 26.1% of the population, according to the Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas (ONE).

  • The Telecommunications Unit of Barbados released figures for the 2013 year, in the mobile sector, there have been instances of net declines in the market, particularly in 2013, with losses of over 40,000 subscriptions. At the end of 2013, there were 307,708 mobile subscribers, a penetration of 108%.

  • CWC reported group revenues of USD1.873bn in the company's financial 2013/14 year ending March 2014. This was a contraction of 4% compared to USD1.942bn in FY12/13. The company's Fixed voice and Enterprise, data and other segments were the key drivers of this...
