  • Canada's medical device market ranks as the ninth largest in the world. In 2013, the medical device market is estimated at US$7.3bn, equal to US$208 per capita. The market is projected to increase at a CAGR of 3.5% to reach US$8.6bn by 2018. Around 80% of the market is supplied by imports, principally from the USA.

  • Canada imported medical equipment and supplies valued at US$5.5bn in 2012. This marked an increase of 8.1% over 2011. In CAGR terms, imports expanded by a rate of 6.8% in the 2007-2012 period. According to the latest monthly trade data, the running annual import total reached US$5,542.1mn in the 12 months to December 2013, representing a marginal y-o-y US dollar growth of 0.5%.

  • Canadian exports of medical devices totalled US$1.6bn in 2012, a decrease of 2.1% from 2011. This decline is only the third time over 2002-2012 period that exports have fallen. The CAGR in US dollar terms for the 2007-2012 period was 2.6%. According to the latest monthly trade data, the running annual export total reached US$1,686.4mn in the 12 months to December 2013, representing a y-o-y US dollar growth of 4.4%.

  • There are around 1,000 manufacturers of medical devices in Canada, employing approximately 26,000 people at 1,100 facilities across the country. The larger companies, although small in number, employ around 43% of the workforce. The majority of the industry is concentrated in Southern Ontario and Quebec and to a lesser extent British Colombia. In 2012, according to data from Statistics Canada, domestic production of medical equipment and supplies was estimated at C$2,708mn (US$2,708mn).
