Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar Telecommunications Report

BMI View :   Demand is already outstripping supply in Myanmar following the launch of mobile services by Ooredoo , Telenor and the rebranding of MPT in partnership with KDDI and Sumitomo . Affordable prices for SIM cards has seen each operator sell over 1mn new subscriptions in the first month of operation, with the competition expected to drive further uptake. A s a result of this, Myanmar is set to become the fastest growing market in the world. The influx of foreign capital into the telecoms sector highlights the growth potential we see for Myanmar's telecoms industry. By contrast, we expect investment remains low in Laos and Cambodia, with growth opportunities limited by the low ARPUs, prominence of prepaid subscribers, fierce competition in overcrowded markets and the uncertain regulatory environment. In fact, international operators such as VimpelCom have endeavoured to exit investments in Laos and Cambodia, while conditions remain volatile.

Key Data

  • Release of data from the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia has led to some revisions in forecasts for Cambodia, while Laotian projections remain mostly unchanged. • BMI now forecasts growth of 135% in 2014 in Myanmar as a result of the Ooredoo and Telenor launches, with subscribers rising from 5.4mn to 12.7mn. By the end of 2018, we see mobile subscriptions reaching 57.7mn for a penetration of 104.1%.

  • LTE services have been made available in Laos and Cambodia following Smart's launch in the latter as of January 2014. However, we do not expect this to provide a significant boost to the overall broadband market due to a lack of demand and consumers' low purchasing power.

  • Ooredoo and Telenor added over 1mn subscribers in their first month following launch. MPT also added another 1mn as a result of lower prices from the...
