Austria Telecommunications Report

BMI View : Austria has started to show signs of saturation in the first nine months of 2013, reporting net losses each quarter, for a total of 256,000 subscribers. This is unsurprising given the penetration rate of 155%, as of September 2013. In addition to operator's purging their subscriber bases of inactive SIM cards, a weaker domestic economy is weighing on consumer spending and made low-cost no-frills services more appealing. 2014 is likely to see the MVNO market heat up as a result of these trends and ultra-low wholesale prices being offered by Drei . International MVNO Lycamobile had already soft-launched with the intention of exploiting this opportunity . The entrance of MVNOs, c ombined with new mobile termination rates imposed by the regulator and lower consumer spending, means we expect lower ARPU rates in 2014, and this may negatively impact operators. The major mobile carriers will hope that LTE plans mitigates this trend somewhat, however, with only 10,000 4G subscribers in the market in Q213, growth will need to pick up quickly.

Key Data

  • After the mobile market registered its first-ever quarter of decline in Q113, there were further net losses in 9M13. This was mostly due to purging inactive subscribers from user bases following the merger of Hutchison Drei Austria and Orange, as well as Yesss! and A1 Telekom Austria.

  • The latest RTR data show LTE subscription growth accelerated in Q213 with the arrival of combined voice and data tariffs. Subscriptions reached 10,220 by the end of June 2013, up from 628 the previous quarter.

  • Regulatory data show that the amount of data consumed is rapidly rising. In Q213, this was an increase of 67.3% y-o-y for a total of 26,700Tbps.

  • Growth in M2M is continuing along a steady path, reaching 113,861 in Q213, up from 93,497. Telekom Austria has looked to extend its M2M offerings, as part of the Unlock M2M partnership with Microtronics Engineering . Also, the operator launched its M2M...
