Latest Industry Developments

  • In March 2014, the Angolan government imposed higher import tariffs on various food and drink items. Higher import tariffs are part of the government's effort to diversify the oil-dependent economy as well as support domestic industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. While some staple goods, such as flour, beans, rice, palm oil, sugar, powdered milk and soap, will be exempt from the tariffs, vegetables and fruits are among the items that will be taxed. The increase of tariffs illustrates regulatory challenges present in Angola and could spur inflation thus affecting consumption, especially among the less affluent sections of society.
