Angola Food & Drink Report

BMI View: BMI views Angola as one of the most promising economies in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next decade. Angola's GDP is forecast to increase year-on-year (y-o-y) by an average of 6.5% to 2023. Despite vast inequality in wealth distribution, rapid economic expansion will raise incomes across the board , thus boosting consumption levels in the food and drink industry. Although foreign investors are restricted to large developments and available land is limited, especially when situated close to urbanised areas, an underdeveloped retail sector provides many opportunities.

Key Forecasts

  • Per capita food consumption (local currency) growth (y-o-y) in 2014: +14.0%; compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to 2018: +13.1%.

  • Beer production volume (litres) growth (y-o-y) in 2014: +8.8%; CAGR to 2018: +8.9%.

  • Mass grocery retail sales (local currency) growth (y-o-y) in 2014: +21.7%; CAGR to 2018: +19.5%.

Latest Industry Developments

Spar views Angola as a viable new market to enter, as it looks to expand its operations across Africa. The South African food retail market has become increasingly competitive and many local customers are struggling with substantial personal debt, which means many grocers are expanding into markets in the rest of Africa.

In September 2013, Portuguese food and beverage company Sumol+Compal signed an investment contract with Angola's National Private Investment Agency for the construction of a soft drinks production facility in Angola. Under the terms of the agreement, Sumol+Compal will invest EUR22mn (USD29.24mn) in the construction of the new facility, which will be used to manufacture several juices and nectars. The...
