BMI View:   We recently revised upwards our forecast s for economic growth in Algeria , and now expect to see nominal GDP growing at a compound annual rate of 10.9% between 2014 and 2018 (up from a previous forecast of 8.3%), as we are more positive about private consu mption , and expect to see strong growth across the food and drinks sector . W e continue to view inflation and political unrest as the biggest risks to consumption.

Key Industry Trends And Developments

Auchan Set To Invest EUR450mn In Tunisia: Having bought a 10% interest in Magasin Général in November 2012, French retailer Auchan looks set to open five hypermarkets in Tunisa. African news agency Panapress reported in May 2014 that Auchan intended to invest almost EUR450mn into the project, which upon completion would create 6,000 jobs. Whilst the locations of the hypermarkets require approval by the Tunisian authorities, Tahar Bayahi (President of the group that owns Magasin Général) remains optimistic that the project will reach fruition, with the first store trading by 2016.

ECP Purchases 33% Share In PepsiCo Bottler Atlas Bottling :  US-based Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) has bought a 33% share in Algeria-based PepsiCo bottler Atlas Bottling Corporation (ABC). The transaction comes as part of ECP's USD80mn investment plan. ECP's growth equity, along with the debt from commercial banks, will be used in setting up a new production unit and in expanding bottling capacity. Also, ABC's management team will be provided technical assistance by ECP by supporting them in professionalising business functions...
