BMI View: We have revised upwards our forecast s for economic growth in Algeria , and now expect to see nominal GDP growing at a compound annual rate of 10.9% between 2014 and 2018 (up from a previous forecast of 8.3%), as we are more positive about private consu mption. W e continue to view inflation and political unrest as the biggest risks to consumption.

Key Industry Trends And Developments

Snack Bar Sector Expected To Experience High Growth : Snack bars are relatively new to the Algerian market, with international firms Nestlé and Kellogg the only players in the market. While these products are new to the country, there is excellent growth potential. Retail sales will be driven by spending by higher-income consumers with the ability to spend a portion of their income on non-essential, high-quality goods, and in particular younger consumers who are more willing to try newer, Western products.

Fruit And Vegetable Prices Expected To Decline: The Algerian Trade Ministry is expecting a decline in the price of fruit and vegetables as of May 2013, in line with the wider availability of seasonal produce, which is likely to rejuvenate volume consumption. The expansion of the country's mass grocery retail network, which is facilitated by the high percentage of urban populations, is also likely to support this volume growth in the face of below-potential economic growth and declining hydrocarbon revenues.

Key Risks To Outlook

Increased Security Risks Remain In Play: We continue to view security risks in Algeria as elevated owing to both domestic and external factors. Domestically, political...
